Canning and Preserving the Harvest

On this page we will look at Canning and Preserving Methods, Recipes, Tutorials and more!

Canning is an oldfashioned skill that is as important today as it was in the past. Canning is how we preserve the harvest for future meals. For centuries preserving food when it is abundant is how humans survived when food was scarce. But today preserving home grown and locally sourced food can be just as important as it ever was in the past.

“We can only have precise control over what is in our food by growing, making, canning and preserving it ourselves.”

Top Reasons to be Canning

Why Canning and Preserving are important skills to have at your home(stead).

This is something that I am very passionate about, and for many reasons. The skills needed to preserve food are important skills to learn and to pass on to the next generation before they disappear. You do not have to be a farm girl to learn and use these skills. Everyone can do their part and take charge of their food and the food that we feed our families. If you don’t have your own garden you can get in touch with local farms and gardeners in your community or purchase through local farmer’s markets.

Seasonally persevering food is the best way to enjoy food and herbs out of season. Preserving food can also help us to protect the environment. When we eat seasonally based on where we live, then less food is being shipped to our area where it can not grow out of season. But by preserving those foods at the peak of season we can enjoy them later without purchasing them out of season in the store. It’s like eating fresh tomatoes in the summer and eating canned tomatoes and salsa in the winter instead of eating fresh tomatoes shipped from Mexico in December.

As a beef producer I know that everyone who eats beef can not raise their own cattle and I’m not saying that we don’t need large agricultural farms and ranches, we most certainly do.

While farmland may stretch far and wide, farmers and ranchers themselves make up just 1.3% of the employed US population, and we are raising the food that feeds the other 98.7%.

I just think that people should also look around and take advantage of the food that is being grown and produced locally as well as nationally. One example of why eating from U.S. farmers is a moral decision is the cartel’s exploytation of avocado farmers in Mexico, versus supporting family owned avocado farms in California.  Just keep in mind that the environment is one of many reasons why I support US agriculture with my dollars and voting power.

Okay, so now I will slide my soap box aside and and finish telling you about preserving food.

When it comes to canning, fermenting and freezing here are list of reasons that we should be preserving all the food we can.
